The analytical channel DeepState has investigated the state of fortifications in the Sumy region.
Engineering and fortification structures (EFS) remain a hot topic amid Russia’s growing activity near Sumy. Public questions have intensified regarding the region's defense, especially following setbacks in Kharkiv.
The issue is important, but DeepState aims for constructive analysis rather than emotional claims. They communicate with soldiers and verify details before drawing conclusions.
In September 2024, DeepState visited areas roughly 20–25 km from the border, where fortifications were supposedly being built. Photos confirm some structures exist—trenches, strongpoints, and anti-FPV netting. But critical engineering barriers like anti-tank obstacles were poorly executed or absent.
Satellite imagery from April 25, 2025, shows no fortifications in the Zhuravka–Novenke–Basivka area, nor in the broader line from Khotin to Yunakivka. Russian forces are exploiting these gaps with mass infantry assaults.
Soldiers confirmed that only basic positions were built by troops themselves. No official dragon’s teeth, minefields, or explosive barriers were in place—mining was handled independently by brigades, with some tactical success.
Drone threats may have hindered border construction, but troops say enemy activity was manageable and comparable to other regions where fortifications were built. Thus, basic defenses could have and should have been constructed.
In conclusion, public concern over Sumy’s fortifications is valid. These failures undermine trust and must be addressed urgently.
