On June 3, 2025, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a leadership change within the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Major General Mykhailo Drapatyi has been appointed as the Commander of the Joint Forces, focusing exclusively on combat operations.

"Mykhailo Drapatyi will concentrate solely on combat matters and has been appointed as the Commander of the Joint Forces to fully dedicate himself to the front line," President Zelenskyy stated during his evening address. "Regarding the Ground Forces system, especially tasks like training, preparation, changes in territorial recruitment centers, and everything related to that, another individual will handle these responsibilities."

Major General Drapatyi also issued a statement:

"I had an extensive conversation with the President. I reported everything currently known about the tragedy at the training ground—every step: who was present, who was responsible for the personnel, who was supposed to act.

I explained to the Head of State the reasons for my decision. The President listened, supported me, and suggested focusing on the main objectives—the war, the front, and victory. I am grateful to the Supreme Commander-in-Chief for his trust, our shared understanding of responsibility, and the vision for the changes our army needs.

We must change the internal culture within the military. The culture of how commanders treat their soldiers, fulfill their duties, and value the life of every Ukrainian warrior who has taken up arms to defend Ukraine.

I have received an assignment from the President. I remain in service. On the front line. Where I need to be. Where I can contribute the most.

Glory to Ukraine!"

It is worth recalling that Major General Mykhailo Drapatyi submitted his resignation as Commander of the Ground Forces following a Russian strike on the 239th training ground of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He cited his inability to eradicate irresponsibility among commanders, collusion, and impunity within the army as reasons for his resignation.

According to Presidential Decree No. 384/2025 dated June 3, 2025, Major General Mykhailo Drapatyi has been appointed as the Commander of the Joint Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
