On May 28, 2025, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced an additional military aid package for Ukraine worth approximately €5 billion. The announcement was made during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's official visit to Berlin.
Germany continues its strategic support for Ukraine both on the battlefield and in developing its defense industrial base. According to Welt, the funding will cover several key areas:
- Defense production in Ukraine. Germany will invest in the production of long-range drones, including the BARS, An-196 "Liutyi," and VB140 Flamingo models, which have a range of up to 800 km, surpassing the capabilities of Germany's Taurus missiles.
- Air defense systems. The package includes the delivery of four IRIS-T surface-to-air missile systems manufactured by Diehl, along with the necessary ammunition.
- Equipment repair in Ukraine. The KNDS defense group will carry out maintenance and repairs of military equipment, such as the Gepard anti-aircraft systems, directly on Ukrainian territory.
- Medical support. Part of the funding will be allocated to the production of medical equipment for the needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
The aid package is financed from funds previously approved by the Bundestag. Specific types of weaponry remain classified in accordance with the German government's new policy on security information.
The German government emphasizes that the goal is not only to assist in the current conflict but also to strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities in the long term by developing its own production and logistics infrastructure.
