Швеція виділяє 4,8 млрд крон на посилення оборони України On 22 May, the Swedish Government authorized a major financial contribution totaling SEK 4.8 billion to support Ukraine’s defence capability.

The funding, delivered through the Swedish Armed Forces, will be channeled into several international coalitions and initiatives dedicated to strengthening Ukraine’s military and industrial resilience. The donation forms part of Sweden’s 19th military aid package to Ukraine, approved by the Riksdag in late April.

“These disbursements will make Ukraine’s Armed Forces and defence industry stronger in their defence against Russia,” said Sweden’s Minister for Defence Pål Jonson.

Targeted support through multinational coalitions

Sweden’s funding will be directed to several capability coalitions coordinated under the Ukraine Defence Contact Group (UDCG), a format of nearly 60 countries working together to deliver international military assistance to Ukraine. The breakdown includes:

  • Demining Coalition – SEK 100 million for mine clearance equipment, including sensors, vehicles, and personal protection gear.
  • Drone Coalition – SEK 300 million for procurement of various types of unmanned aerial vehicles.
  • Maritime Coalition – SEK 50 million to support the training of Ukrainian Navy personnel through Operation Intercharge.
  • IT Coalition – SEK 30 million for equipment to support the deployment of Ukraine’s DELTA battlefield awareness system.

Strengthening Ukraine’s defence industry

Sweden is also contributing over SEK 1 billion to the Danish-led procurement model that facilitates the purchase of defence materiel from Ukraine’s domestic defence industry — a key element in building long-term sustainability and industrial self-reliance.

Joint Nordic-Baltic procurement of ground combat equipment

An additional SEK 418 million is being allocated to support Ukraine’s ground forces, including armored vehicles, under a joint procurement led by Denmark. Sweden has initiated cooperation with other Nordic and Baltic countries to deliver coordinated support for Ukraine’s mechanized forces.

Ammunition procurement via Czech and Estonian initiatives

To address urgent ammunition shortages, Sweden will contribute:

  • SEK 550 million to the Czech-led international initiative for artillery shells with short delivery times.
  • SEK 546 million to Estonia’s co-financing program for ammunition acquisition.

These donations support the EU’s goal of delivering at least 2 million artillery shells to Ukraine in 2025.

Boosting air defence and long-range strike capability

Air defence systems and long-range drones remain top priorities for Ukraine’s Armed Forces. Sweden is allocating over SEK 1 billion for multinational procurements of both systems to enable strikes deep behind enemy lines and bolster front-line protection.
