President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has officially awarded the 38th Separate Marine Brigade of the Ukrainian Navy the honorary title “named after Hetman Petro Sahaidachny.”

The corresponding decree No. 314/2025 was signed on May 23, 2025. According to the document, the title was granted “to restore the historical traditions of the national army, and in recognition of exemplary performance during the defense of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and independence.”

From now on, the unit will be formally known as the 38th Separate Marine Brigade named after Hetman Petro Sahaidachny of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

About the Brigade

The 38th Marine Brigade is one of the youngest formations of Ukraine’s Naval Infantry, created during the full-scale Russian invasion. Despite its short history, the brigade has already played a significant role on the southern frontlines, actively participating in defensive and offensive operations in the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions.

Formed primarily from mobilized troops and experienced veterans, the unit has become a symbol of resilience and adaptability. The brigade continues to reinforce Ukraine’s maritime defense and contributes to joint operations with other Marine and Army units.

Who Was Petro Sahaidachny?

Hetman Petro Sahaidachny was a prominent Ukrainian military and political leader of the early 17th century, known for his leadership of the Zaporozhian Cossacks and successful military campaigns against the Ottoman Empire and Muscovy. He is remembered for his efforts to defend Ukrainian autonomy and align with European powers in the region.

By naming the brigade after Sahaidachny, Ukraine honors his legacy and draws a symbolic connection between today’s defenders and the historic warrior traditions of the Ukrainian people.
