In response to the pressing need for bolstered air defense within Ukraine's Ground Forces, the 1020th Anti-Aircraft Missile and Artillery Regiment was established on January 30, 2023. Initially formed as a battalion, it was reorganized into a full regiment by June 5, 2024, continuing its mission to shield military units and critical infrastructure from aerial threats.

The regiment is equipped with Soviet-designed 2S6 Tunguska self-propelled anti-aircraft systems. Each system features two 30mm 2A38 automatic cannons and eight 9M311 surface-to-air missiles. These weapons enable the unit to engage aerial targets at altitudes up to 3,500 meters and distances up to 4,000 meters with its cannons, and up to 8,000 meters with its missiles.
